Discover the incredible beauty and biodiversity of Rwanda on this immersive 3-day chimpanzee trekking adventure in Nyungwe Forest National Park. Home to ancient rainforests, unique wildlife, and playful chimpanzees, Nyungwe offers one of Africa's most rewarding primate experiences.
This journey combines thrilling chimpanzee tracking, a breathtaking canopy walk above the forest, scenic tea plantations, and relaxing moments along the beautiful shores of Lake Kivu — perfect for nature lovers and adventure seekers looking to experience Rwanda beyond the ordinary.
After breakfast, depart Kigali and begin your scenic journey toward Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse rainforests. Along the drive, pass through Rwanda's famous rolling hills, local villages, and beautiful countryside landscapes.
After lunch, experience the famous Nyungwe Canopy Walk — beginning with a guided hike along the Igishigishi Trail through towering trees, birds, butterflies, and lush vegetation. The highlight is the suspended canopy bridge hanging high above the rainforest floor, offering spectacular panoramic views. As you walk above the ancient forest, you may hear monkeys calling and spot unique bird species hidden among the trees.
After the excursion, return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature.
Your day starts very early as you head to park headquarters for a briefing before entering the dense rainforest with experienced guides and trackers. The forest comes alive with sounds of birds, insects, and primates as you hike through jungle trails in search of Nyungwe's energetic chimpanzee troops.
Once located, spend unforgettable moments observing these intelligent primates as they feed, communicate, jump between branches, and interact in their natural habitat. Nyungwe is also home to colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, mangabeys, and red-tailed monkeys, making the trek even more rewarding.
After the trek, return for lunch and later visit nearby tea plantations for scenic views and photography. In the afternoon, continue your journey to the peaceful shores of Lake Kivu — one of Africa's Great Lakes — to relax and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere.
After breakfast, enjoy a boat excursion on Lake Kivu to the famous Napoleon Island — named for its resemblance to Napoleon's iconic military hat when viewed from a distance. During the ride, enjoy beautiful views of the lake, surrounding hills, fishing villages, and nearby islands.
On the island, explore walking trails while spotting bird species including fish eagles, kingfishers, and palm nut vultures. The island is also known for its large colony of fruit bats hanging in the tall trees.
After the excursion, begin your scenic drive back to Kigali. Upon arrival, your safari comes to an end.
