Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest mountain at 4,565 meters and a highly recommended trekking destination for acclimatization before climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. This 4-day route offers a more gradual and comfortable ascent, allowing trekkers to fully experience the mountain's diverse ecosystems, from lush forest to volcanic alpine terrain.
Unlike Kilimanjaro, trekking Mount Meru requires an armed ranger throughout the journey due to its location within Arusha National Park, where wildlife roams freely. The route provides stunning scenery, fewer crowds, and a rewarding summit experience.
After breakfast in Arusha, you drive to Momella Gate for registration before starting your trek. The trail begins through Arusha National Park, offering a unique walking safari experience where wildlife such as giraffes, buffalo, zebras, and antelopes may be seen along the way.
You hike steadily through forested terrain and pass scenic waterfalls before reaching Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight stay.
Today's hike becomes steeper as you ascend through lush forest into moorland terrain. The trail offers expanding views of the mountain and surrounding landscapes.
In the afternoon, you may take an optional short acclimatization hike to Little Meru before returning to Saddle Hut for rest and overnight stay in preparation for summit day.
You begin your summit attempt in the early hours of the morning under a clear night sky. The climb is steep and rocky as you pass Rhino Point and Cobra Point before reaching Meru Peak (4,565m) at sunrise.
After enjoying the views, you descend back to Saddle Hut for a full breakfast and spend the rest of the day resting and recovering.
After breakfast, you descend through Miriakamba Hut back to Momella Gate. The trail offers a final opportunity to enjoy the forest scenery and wildlife sightings before exiting Arusha National Park.
Upon arrival at the gate, you are transferred back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport, marking the end of your trek.
