The Marangu Route, famously known as the "Coca-Cola Route," is the only Kilimanjaro trail that offers hut accommodation instead of camping, making it one of the most comfortable and accessible ways to reach the summit of Africa's highest mountain.
This 5-day trek follows a gradual ascent from the eastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, passing through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and finally the icy summit zone of Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Despite being the shortest standard route, it remains a rewarding challenge that combines comfort, scenery, and a true summit experience.
After breakfast, you are transferred to Marangu Gate for registration before beginning your climb through the lush rainforest zone. The trail is shaded and alive with bird species and playful colobus monkeys.
The air is humid and fresh as you gradually ascend through dense vegetation toward Mandara Hut, where you arrive in the afternoon for rest and overnight stay in a mountain hut.
Today's trek continues through the moorland zone, where the landscape opens up and vegetation changes dramatically. Giant lobelias and unique alpine plants dominate the scenery while Kilimanjaro's peaks become more visible.
The hike is steady and rewarding, offering wide panoramic views before arriving at Horombo Hut for overnight rest.
You ascend into the alpine desert zone where conditions become more rugged and vegetation sparse. The terrain is dry, open, and dramatic, offering striking views of the mountain landscape.
The climb becomes more challenging as altitude increases. You arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon to rest and prepare for your summit attempt.
Your summit attempt begins just after midnight under a sky filled with stars. The climb is steep and demanding due to high altitude, but steady progress leads you to Gilman's Point and eventually Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating your achievement at sunrise, you descend back to Kibo Hut for rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut for overnight recovery.
After breakfast, you descend through the rainforest zone back to Marangu Gate. The air becomes warmer and richer in oxygen as you complete your final stretch.
At the gate, successful climbers receive their summit certificates before transferring back to Moshi or Arusha for rest and celebration.
