The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border, offering a quieter, more remote, and less crowded climbing experience. Known for its gentle gradient and gradual ascent, it is considered one of the more manageable routes while still leading to the summit of Africa's highest peak, Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
The journey passes through a beautiful progression of landscapes, from cultivated farmland and pine forests to moorlands, alpine desert, and finally the arctic summit zone, making it both scenic and rewarding.
After transfer from Moshi or Arusha, you arrive at Rongai Gate for registration before beginning your trek. The trail starts gently through farmland and pine forest, gradually ascending toward the mountain. The atmosphere is peaceful and less crowded compared to other routes.
After several hours of hiking, you reach Simba Camp near the First Cave for overnight stay.
Today's trek continues through moorland terrain with expanding views of the surrounding landscapes. You pass Second Cave before continuing steadily upward. Vegetation becomes more unique with giant lobelias and groundsels dominating the scenery.
You arrive at Kikelewa Camp for rest and overnight stay in a quiet alpine environment.
A shorter but steeper climb takes you to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located in one of the most dramatic settings on Kilimanjaro beneath the jagged peaks of Mawenzi.
The afternoon is dedicated to rest and acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to higher altitude while enjoying one of the most scenic camps on the mountain.
You cross the vast "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, entering a stark alpine desert that resembles a lunar landscape. The trail is wide, dry, and exposed, with minimal vegetation.
You arrive at Kibo Hut at the base of the summit, where you rest and prepare for the final ascent that begins at midnight.
Around midnight, you begin the most challenging part of the trek toward Uhuru Peak. The climb is slow and demanding due to altitude, passing through Gilman's Point before reaching the summit at sunrise.
After celebrating at the Roof of Africa (5,895m), you descend back to Kibo Hut for rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut for overnight recovery.
After breakfast, you begin your final descent through moorland and lush rainforest toward Marangu Gate. The air becomes richer in oxygen as you descend, and the landscape becomes greener and more vibrant.
At the gate, you receive your summit certificate before transferring back to Moshi or Arusha.
